3D Hubs The 3D printer next door

The idea behind 3D Hubs is simple. Give consumers access to a global network of individually run 3D printers to which they can easily send designs. The printers set their own price, listing themselves by resolution and material. 3D Hubs takes 15 percent of each transaction.

Bram de Zwart and Brian Garret worked for industry giant3D Systemsfor four years before they left to set up3D Hubsin Amsterdam last year.  In the 14 months that have passed since, 3D Hubs have developed a network of 3,800 printers spread across 80 countries. Theyre not trifling numbers given, as de Zwart says, there are only 200,000 3D printers in the world today.

The traction 3D Hubs has comes from it being able to align the benefits of 3D printing while negating some of the drag in the market.

We believe the power of 3D printing is in localizing manufacturing. But that wasnt happening. All the major service providers were shipping from one location, de Zwart says.

For instance: I dont have access to a 3D printer, but through 3D Hubs I can send a design out to a printer within a minute or two. Im at my desk on Market Street in San Francisco. I enter my address into 3D Hubs and it points me in the direction of a 3D Printer a short walk from me on the corner of 6th and Folsom.

de Zwart says that most of the transactions that go through 3D Hubs are done so locally that the customer picks them up in person. It brings the customer into close contact with the 3D printer, driving awareness and developing the market. The people see the printer brands and theyre satisfied and maybe they go buy the printer. Also, they talk to the printer owners, many of who have already earned back their printer purchase, de Zwart says.

By networking 3D printers and closing the geographical gap between the point of design and the point of production, 3D Hubs can get the finished product to consumers in two days, which is unprecedented with consumer 3D printing services. The speed of turnaround is a longtime bugbear in 3D printing, but here, not so much.

If the idea continues to gather momentum, it will provide an alternative to the exciting world imagined by some advocates where theres a 3D printer in every home.

With 3D printing, theres a wide range of material and a lot of technology. The chance that there will be one machine that will do everything is very slim, de Zwart says.

The bigger picture is that access is more important than ownership. When I look at my generation, they dont want the ownership.

Last week, 3D Hubs announced a new partnership with Autodesk, who integrated its API (which allows customers to send their designs to printers) into its free 3D design software apps. Its a fitting partnership, given that de Zwarts ideas about the sharing economy fit closely withAutodesk CEO Carl Bass own thoughtswhen I spoke to him recently.

3D Hubs continues to add printers at a solid clip too. Twenty printer manufacturers let 3D Hubs put flyers in their boxes to recruit printers directly. de Zwart says that given how fast 3D printing technology is changing, the best incentive in getting printers to sign up outside of financial gain is encouraging them to make the most of their printer before it becomes obsolete.

Garret thinks that 3D printing is where the Internet was 10 or 15 years ago. No one could create a page. Now you have microblogs, Twitter, Facebook, he says. de Zwart concurs. Theres still a lack of knowledge about how to use a 3D printer, he adds. 3D Hubs brings the sharing economy to the 3D printing market, but the end result is that it drives adoption.

For a company like 3D Hubs the rate of change is an enthralling if terrifying proposition. The company has made a smart (if niche) beginning in making the best of the opportunity and problems facing 3D printing. But powerful forces are going to hit the market in the coming years. This has been the easy part. 3D Hubs are in for a wild ride.

On behalf of 3D Maryland we want to thank everyone who has helped and supported this program. Although our time is done we know that we helped to elevate 3D printing not only in Maryland, but across the country as well.

The 3D Innovation Hub at Howard Community College offers full-service 3D printing, also known as customized additive manufacturing. The hub uses plastic filament or plaster powder in printers to build objects within three dimensions. The results are used in educational visualization, demonstration, and even prototype testing.

To integrate this technology into the college campus, the 3D Innovation Hub is a glass-walled center prominently located on the first floor of Duncan Hall. Its open and airy design encourages students and the public to watch 3D printed objects being made from start to finish.

Students have the opportunity to build objects that have real-life applications to their future careers and faculty can develop specialized models to enhance their classroom instruction. In the near future, local businesses will be able to request a 3D printing design consultation or submit their own designs for fabrication at a reasonable cost.

With support from the Howard County Economic Development Authority (HCEDA), the 3D Innovation Hub is the next step forward for 3D printing and additive manufacturing in Howard County, building upon the success generated by the HCEDAs recent two-year initiative that helped raised awareness of additive manufacturing technology and its capabilities for commercial use.

The Micro 3D printer. M3D, based in Bethesda, is one of several firms working to build Marylands additive manufacturing industry.

Close to $3.5 million has been pledged on Kickstarter to the Micro, a tabletop machine advertised as the worlds first consumer-friendly 3D printer. Barely a week after the early-April launch of its crowdfunding campaign,M3D, the two-man outfit responsible for designing the printer and its corresponding software, broke $2 million in pledges. News spread across the tech blogosphere. An easy-to-use 3D printer that costs barely $100 more than the latest Google Chromebook? Get yours today!

The news coverage glossed over the companys locationBethesda, otherwise unremarkable detail were it not for whats currently brewing in the Land of Pleasant Living. Companies, community leaders, and state officials have made impressive bets on additive manufacturing in an attempt to style Maryland as the 3D-printing hotbed of the U.S. and grow the states manufacturing sector in the process.

We have a very real opportunity to build Maryland into a hub for 3D printing and additive manufacturing, increasing Marylands competitiveness, bottom line, and driving economic growth, says Jan Baum, executive director of 3D Maryland, a new program thats pushing awareness of and education about 3D-printing technologies as the new means for companies large and small to create inexpensive prototypes.

3D printing or additive manufacturing, so called because computerized machines successively layer material to create three-dimensional objects, has grown in popularity over the last decade as technology has advanced and costs have come down. The technique allows for rapid prototyping as well as the creation of objects that traditional injection molds cannot, and is driving a nascent but fast-growing market that the market research firmGartner estimatesto be worth $669 million in 2014.

In Maryland, a 2,000-square-foot Innovation and Printing Lab, established with the help of government funding, opened this spring at the Maryland Center for Entrepreneurship and will serve as 3D Marylands headquarters. Four 3D printerssome suited for the desktop, others industrial-gradeare installed in the lab. Baum, an industry veteran, is taking a two-year hiatus from her gig directing a 3D-printing lab at Towson University to spearhead the project.

Marylands push behind additive manufacturing isnt limited to the 3D Maryland initiative, which will begin in Howard County, to the southwest of Baltimore, and eventually expand to the rest of the state. Signed into law this year was a bill establishing a Northeastern Maryland Additive Manufacturing Innovation Authority, a partnership with the Aberdeen Proving Grounds and state legislators in Cecil and Harford counties, northeast of Baltimore. And a host of companies, from Aberdeen in the north to the suburbs of Washington, D.C., routinely turn to digital fabrication for their rapid prototyping needs. Columbia-based Bowles Fluidics, makers of automotive part such as nozzles and washer pumps, uses a EnvisionTEC 3D printer. Most of the unmanned aerial drones built by Jessup-based UAV Solutions include a 3D-printed part. Danko Arlington, a Baltimore-based firm that serves the military and aerospace industries, owns two of the largest 3D printers on the market today. A professional users group that includes Under Armour, Stanley Black and Decker, and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab serves as an exchange, Baum says, for swapping ideas and new manufacturing processes.

Ultimately, the goal is to attract the companies creating additive manufacturing jobs and compel them to move to the state. Its already happening, Baum says: a New York-based manufacturer that uses nine 3D printers in its production process phoned her in April about relocating to Maryland because of our commitment to these technologies. M3Ds co-founders, David Jones and Michael Armani, also have jobs on the brain. Thanks to the strong Kickstarter support, the pair hope to have all M3Ds operations based in Montgomery County, northwest of Washington, D.C., by the time they start shipping the first run of $299 Micro 3D printers in early 2015.

In Maryland we have done a very good job of creating an ecosystem around life sciences, around cyber[security], but this area around manufacturingthats a real opportunity for the Maryland economy, says Howard County executive Ken Ulman, whos now running for Maryland lieutenant governor in 2014 on current lieutenant governor Anthony Browns ticket. It was Ulman who, along with Howard County Council approval, allotted $530,000 for 3D Marylandthe lab space, equipment, and salaries for Baum and a lab technicianas a two-year pilot project. He calls the states manufacturing economy sophisticated and high-tech, noting that additive manufacturing is Marylands sweet spot.

A 2014 report from the Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore, an economic development group representing Baltimore city and the surrounding counties, makes the same claims. No region is better positioned for improving, refining, and creating new methods and uses for 3D printing, the reports authors write, adding that digital fabrication technologies are the future of manufacturing in Maryland.

That could very well be, especially if 3D printinga technology with roots dating back to the 1980scan continue to distance itself from its recent do-it-yourself, maker reputation (see: MakerBot, Micro) and position itself in the minds of legislators and others as a key tool to revive American manufacturing (see: Stratasys Fortus). Some of the largest U.S. manufacturers have already taken note: General Electrichas promised $3.5 billion to triple the size of its 70-person 3D-printing staff over the next five years.

And when four industry representatives were invited by the House Committee on Small Business in March to testify on Capitol Hill about the economic benefits of 3D printing, Baum told them that additive manufacturing will alter how we compete in an increasingly global marketplace by giving startups and other small businesses a more financially efficient means to test out new technologies before scaling them up.

We dont think any other state is doing what Maryland is doing [with 3D printing], Baum says. We know that innovation and entrepreneurship are the backbone of the economy increasingly going forward.

The EOS M 100 is an industrial 3D printer made by the German manufacturer EOS. The EOS EOSINT M 100 was introduced during formnext 2015, at Frankfurt, Germany. The EOS M 100 is based on the DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering) 3D printing technology developed by EOS. This 3D printing technique uses a fibre laser to melt and fuse fine metal powder. Layer after layer the 3D object is built. Poor Mans 3D Printer

My goal was to build a cheap and inexpensive 3D Printer for less than 100 Dollar/Euro

What are the features of the Poor Mans 3D Printer ?

– use of open source firmware, modified version of Tonokip

– max. build size 40mm x 40mm x 40mm

– Arduino Board Mega 2560 (on ebay from china): 10 Euro

– 2 pcs. Stackable Motor Driver Shield L293D 6 Euro

– Hotend MK7 MK8 noozle 0,4mm+thermistor+cartridge 20 Euro

– PTFE Tube 4 x 2mm & 2 pcs. 1/8 BSP 6 Euro

– MOSFETs,resistors,caps,LEDs,thermistor 5 Euro

– 4 pcs. DVD/Blu-ray drives, with stepper motors ! old cd drives cant be used because they work with dc-motors

– old PC power supply, 12V/5A and 5V/2A are required

– stepper motor nema17-like from old printer for extruder

– i use a modified gear (see pictures) from an old hp printer for the bowden-extruder, optional you could get an airtripper extruder for about 25 Euro

Things that every hobbyist has in his garage 🙂

– many screws, nuts and washers M3,M4,M5

– aluminium-sheet for the frame, you can also use wood

– some alu/metal profiles, see pictures

I had to made counterweights for the z-axis because the x- dvd drive + Hotend are too heavy for the small steppers

The counterweight is simply connected through a cord and a pulley with the drive.

The weight of one counterweight = weight of (x drive + hotend) /2

The Extruder was build of a gear of an old hp printer deskjet 300. I remove the original stepper (too weak) and

replace it with a bigger one, i find two of them in an epson stylus color 600.

The shaft was shorten and milled grooves with a dremel, then a metal gearwheel was placed near the shaft.

The Hotend is aMK7/MK8i found on ebay.

i cut some aluminium plates for a better cooling and place a small fan beside

the bigger alu plate above separates the hotend from the BSP fitting via two small screws

the bed is heated by two parallel resistors 22R/7W/axial and reaches 110C

I uploaded a hand drawn schematic, feel free to comment/ask questions.

In the picture you can see how to modify the second shield, cut the connector pins D12 and D7,

bridge D12 with D13 and D2 with D7, now the mega can talk with the shields separatly

I useTonokipin a modified version and addedAdafruit Motor shield libraryalso modified to use 2 shields.

here you can see the first results before/after calibration and some final changes in the firmware, the cube was printed with 1.75mm ABS filament, the edge length in the gcode is 10mm the final result 10.06mm !!!

I change the driver board toramps 1.4with A4988 Stepper driver because they have become very cheap on ebay.

( board + 4 stepper drivers about 20$ incl. shipping)

I have supplied the x/y/z steppers with 8 Volt, 12 Volt is to much for those tiny things, with only 5 Volt the drivers wont work. i also limit the current to 300mA (with the poti at drivers)

Here are my results with usingMarlinas Firmware.

I uploaded my configuration file from Marlin and also the slicr settings.

Because of the great demand, I have uploaded a drawing from the ground frame.

pretty awesome. looks like a frankenstein printer but thats what this site is all about. make from what you have. some of these guys spend $1000 on making one of these when you probably made it with $40. good job

I will connect dvd stepper motor and i connect 3d printer software and start run motor did not run but vibrate at 11v

Hi buddy , I gt a problem with my 3 CD ROM steppers because I don`t have any data of those.I think to drive them by A4988 Pololu drivers and is necessay to know the correct current value to be able to calibrate the current by these drivers.How do I find out this current value?.
